Today's Class- 9/18/17
Here is how I envision tonight:
6:00-7:00 Discussion of "Learning Styles" and how they blend with "teaching styles"
7:00-8:30 Library/Essay source scavenger hunt. You will have the option to do with independently or with my help. Your findings will be due (electronically) by tomorrow. Don't worry...this is a simple task and I am going to give you plenty of time to do it well.
I hope this spot is ok for my "free write" blog post.
ReplyDeleteLast nights class helped me realize some things about college that I may not have really thought about before. For one, I was completely mind blown that some college professors are never even trained to teach. This comes as a surprise to me because I am going to school to teach Biology and I am required to take biology classes as well as secondary ed. classes. Why do we have to be trained in teaching for elementary and secondary grades but not college level? Are we, the students, expected to have learned "how to learn" by then, that professors are not required to learn how to teach?
I came into college knowing that I would have more responsibilities in the class room being an adult, but I assumed each professor would be equipped to guide me in the direction of success in their classroom. I'm glad I know now that I have to be more selective and strategic in my college journey. Just like real life, you have to research your options first before you make an educated decision. Especially when you are paying for tuition and would like to be somewhat fluent in at least the fundamentals of your field by graduation.
I think school in general is taught to be a safe playing field in your younger years. So much so, that by the time you get to college you still think that everyone is looking out for your best interest and making sure you pass and graduate. But, that is not the case, college is closer to the real world and your professor could be anybody. You're not completely on your own yet and there are definitely many resources around you, but things now become up to you to get.
I'm really glad I am taking this class, especially in my first semester of my first year back to college. I believe the material and exercises that we are doing are really going to help me with the rest of my classes and give me a better handle on my success in school in general.

ReplyDeletebelow is my last post.
Hey everyone! Its Victor again, today I wanna talk about some things im starting to realize within my college that I currently attend. We are at about the 4th or 5th class in most classes and i’m starting to see cliques develop in the classroom. Now of course this is all expected but its tough especially when you see all the on campus students group together talking about campus drama. That’s not really interesting to me though. I haven’t felt more old than I have now walking into a majority freshmen class. There’s a lot more than just cliques, there’s also new lingo that I found myself not understanding. I remember a time in high school where I thought Id always stick with the times, now I see how wrong I was to think that! Quick tip to all my older readers, please do yourself a favor and not get distracted by the age differences in school or lingo its a battle you will never win and you wont feel the same worrying about it than you would if you just ignored it!
Shifts in "lingo" can be especially hard when attempting to bridge these perceived generational gaps. I recently was helping in mediating a dispute between two students when one had told the other, "I don't fuck with you". To me- not being "fucked with" seemed like a pretty good thing. If I had said that to someone as a freshman in college - the intended meaning would have been entirely different than it is today. The "perpetrator" in this instance intended to dismiss the other student- essentially saying that she didn't have the time or interest in thinking about the other student. It was meant to convey disinterest and disrespect....I had no idea.
